Moses (nucleus of creation) 1945. Frida Kahlo, Mexican (1907-1954)
This painting contains portraits of Zeus, Jesus, Marx, Engels, Luther, Napoleon, Hitler, Osiris, Horus, Tamerlane, Lenin, Stalin, Ghandi, Ghengis Khan, Nefertiti, Tutankhamen, Satan, Virgin Mary, Alexander the Great, Athena, Freud, Mohammed, Van Gogh and others.
We can also see a cell in mitosis, sperm about to fertilize an ovum, Mayan culture and history, the life-giving Sun, and the baby Moses floating in his reed basket on the Nile.
Kahlo was injured in a bus accident and required 35 operations. While recovering she took up painting and became the wife of the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Her style is considered surrealist, though she denied that connection. She is the lady reclining in the sea shell and has made many other self-portraits. Directly opposite her is another figure recling in a shell, her husband.
